Albert Town is a charming former farming settlement at the picturesque meeting point of the Clutha and Hāwea rivers. The small town provides exceptional views of snow-capped mountains looming large over these waterways. Rent a bike and cycle along the paths of the Deans Bank Track. Ride or walk up to the summits of the grassy mounds and look down on the picturesque river. The Upper Clutha River Track offers an excellent opportunity to appreciate the scenery. Follow the trail southeast to the Red Bridge and the Luggate Creek Track. Cross the glorious bridge on the Hāwea River Track, before it branches off into the Newcastle Track.
In the town center, browse the various shops and have a meal at one of the cafés. Go swimming in the pools of the Riverside Park Community Facility. A little northeast of this central point is the Wanaka Rodeo Club.
On a sunny day, stroll through the Wanaka Lavender Farm, whose flowers radiate a light purple hue. The farm also has herb gardens and a gift shop selling the honey made by its own bees. Stay into the evening and watch the sun descend beyond the mountains and turn the sky crimson.
Sites are available at the Albert Town Campground, where you can set up your tent beneath a canopy of stars. Several cottages, bed-and-breakfasts and backpacker lodges provide alternative options for accommodations in the town.
Albert Town settlement was formerly known as Newcastle, before being named after Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. It stands in the eastern region of Wanaka, toward the southern end of New Zealand’s South Island.
