This emblematic modern landmark of the city stretches for 3.5 miles (5.6 kilometers) between south Mumbai and the western suburbs. This curving cable-stayed bridge crosses Mahim Bay and connects the trendy Bandra West neighborhood with upmarket Worli. The eight-lane structure features seismic arresters that can resist earthquakes of magnitudes up to 8.0 on the Richter scale. The central, diamond-shaped pylons are 420 feet (128 meters) in height.
One of the most exciting ways to experience the Bandra-Worli Sea Link is to travel across it in a taxi. Going north you’ll be treated to open views of the glistening Arabian Sea and remains of Bandra Fort. On the southbound journey you can look over Mahim Bay and the skyscrapers of the Dadar and Worli neighborhoods.
Several city viewpoints afford uninterrupted panoramas of the bridge. Among them are the ramparts of Bandra Fort and Worli Fort, which are both free to enter. Colorful fishing boats sit in the waters below Worli Fort and present a striking contrast with the bridge’s modern structure. Dadar Beach and the BWSL Promenade, in Bandra West, are other notable vantage points.
The bridge is impressive both during the day and at night. Arrive before nightfall to witness as the setting sun turns the sky into a romantic scene of fiery hues. Then wait to watch as hundreds of bright lights illuminate the lanes and pylons and reflect elegantly in the bay.
Bandra-Worli Sea Link is open 24 hours a day and tolls are applicable. Note that auto rickshaw, bike and pedestrian access to the bridge is prohibited. Trains travel from Mumbai Central to stations in Bandra West and Dadar, from where you can continue by taxi.
