Cross a futuristic tilting bridge, peruse artistic centers and relax with a drink in this modern part of the city.

Quayside is a lively area around the River Tyne that is full of restaurants, bars and clubs. The site, which divides the communes of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Gateshead, is a cultural hub with several artistic complexes. Amble along the riverbanks for views of the sun descending over the glorious bridges and structures of this northern English city.

The Gateshead Millennium Bridge brings many people to the area and is part of an ambitious renovation scheme. See it tilt once or twice a day to allow small vessels to pass beneath. Capture photos of the bridge in the evening, when it basks in a stylish blue glow.

Snap photos of the boats in the River Tyne with a backdrop of some of the city’s most historic and ultramodern buildings. The contrast between old and new is highlighted by the 1930s-style Baltic Flour Mills beside the shiny undulating design of the Sage Gateshead. The latter is a modern concert hall with state-of-the-art features and excellent acoustics.

The old flour mill now holds the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art. Bring the kids to enjoy the many fun family activities, including Explorer Guides and Family Quest. The gallery has collections of modern regional artworks and acclaimed international pieces that encourage reflection. Make your way around the temporary exhibits in this museum.

Stay in the area in the evening to visit the many bars and clubs. Chat to locals over a few drinks to get a glimpse into Newcastle-upon-Tyne’s nightlife. Visit the area for free it is always open.

Quayside covers the banks of the River Tyne at the point where Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Gateshead meet. The street running along the northern side is also called Quayside. Visit the busiest part in the center, which includes Gateshead Millennium Bridge and the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art.
