Auckland’s oldest suburb dates back to 1841 and contains some of the most exclusive and leafiest parts of the city.

Parnell is a bright suburb packed with many of Auckland’s finest attractions, from museums and gardens to a cathedral and an array of historic buildings. It is the oldest and one of the most affluent neighborhoods in the city, with upscale boutiques and restaurants. Stroll down the pleasant lanes and imagine living in one of the majestic estates lining the streets.

As you explore the district, you’ll find the residential zones composed of Edwardian town houses and bay villas from the beginning of the 20th century. For a more detailed view of the district’s architecture, visit the historic Kinder House. Dating back to 1857, the house has an eerie gothic style that has led some to believe it to be haunted. Check out the Ewelme Cottage on the same street for an additional supposedly ghostly structure.

Another architectural gem in the area is the Holy Trinity Cathedral, which stands out for its modern glassy design. Pointed wooden frames add a rustic flair above the impressive stained-glass windows.

Besides its haunted homes and cathedral, the city also has spacious and leafy destinations. On a warm summer day, bring your family to the Parnell Baths for its swimming pools, with climbing frames for the kids. Just a short walk west from the pools, continue enjoying the outdoors with an afternoon at the Parnell Rose Gardens, taking your place at a bench in view of numerous colorful flowers.

Move west for the vast Auckland Domain park, where you’ll encounter the explosion crater and tuff ring of the Pukekawa volcano. While in the park, visit the Wintergarden, and the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

The district lies on the eastern side of central Auckland, overlooking Hobson Bay. It stands right between the Ports of Auckland and the larger area of Newmarket. Ride the train to the Parnell railway station and get around the region by bus or on foot.
