Centuries-old Gothic architecture, spectacular castles, medieval history and mountain peaks make this city in central Romania a fascinating vacation destination.

With medieval walls and watchtowers, centuries-old churches, a cobbled Old Town and a backdrop of mountains and forests, Brasov's beauty has a powerful impact. This ancient city was founded in the 13th century. Many of its old buildings are still standing in excellent condition. History and architecture aren't the only appeal explore the picturesque countryside as well. Go skiing and hiking in the mountains, walk around the old city walls and visit nearby castles and fortresses.

Brasov's medieval, Gothic and Baroque heart is a fascinating place for a stroll. Tour the imposing Black Church, which claims to be the largest Gothic church in Transylvania. Inside the 13th-century Saint Bartholomew Church, study fragments of 800-year-old frescoes.

Explore Brasov's medieval defensive fortifications. See original bastions, the 15th-century Black Tower and White Tower. Catherine's Gate is the only gate to survive from the 1400s. Pick up additional historical insights at the Brasov History Museum. Stroll along Rope Street, one of Europe’s narrowest streets. At night, enjoy an entertaining performance at Opera Brasov or watch a show at the Sică Alexandrescu Theater, the city's main theater.

In the nearby Postavarul Mountains is Poiana Brasov, one of the country's most popular ski resorts. During winter, ski the downhill and slalom runs. In summer, go hiking and horseback riding in the mountains. About 18 miles (29 kilometers) southwest of the city is the hilltop Bran CastleOpens in a new window, thought to be the inspiration for Count Dracula's castle in Bram Stoker’s classic gothic novel.
