8.8/10 Excellent! (788 reviews)
Our experience at Number 10 Hotel was unacceptable from the moment we arrived.
We had booked the room only a few hours earlier, but at check-in we were unexpectedly told that an additional £50 holding deposit was required. When I questioned this and asked whether we could cancel for a refund, the receptionist became aggressive, sarcastic and intimidating. We were told that the booking could be cancelled without any refund, leaving us with no realistic option but to pay and stay.
The receptionist also unnecessarily involved my wife in the confrontation, making her feel singled out, harassed and extremely uncomfortable in a hotel where we were then forced to spend the night. We would have been entirely willing to leave had the hotel allowed us to cancel fairly, but that option was refused and there was little alternative accommodation available at such short notice.
The room itself added to the poor experience. There was an unpleasant smell, and the facilities felt dated, tired and badly in need of refurbishment. The overall standard did not match what we expected from the listing or the price.
The central issue was not simply the deposit. It was the manner in which the situation was handled: poor communication, refusal to offer a reasonable resolution, intimidating behaviour, and accommodation that fell below an acceptable standard.
A hotel should make guests feel safe and welcome. Number 10 Hotel did the opposite. I would not return or recommend it.
