Defined by an imposing rock face rising toward the north, this sunny town is one of the best spots in Tenerife for scuba diving and whale watching.
Los Gigantes is easily among the most picturesque towns on the island, backed by the Acantilados de los Gigantes, a cliff face belonging to the ancient Teno Mountains. Take a boat trip or dive here where the submerged cliff base attracts abundant marine life.
The town takes its name from the Spanish word for “giant,” a reference to the imposing cliffs that overlook the area. In addition to serving as a scenic backdrop, the cliffs provide protection from trade winds, contributing to a warm and sunny climate. Appreciate the reputation laid-back Los Gigantes has earned as having a more easygoing atmosphere than hectic destinations found farther south.
Arrange a boat excursion in search of the 28 species of whales and dolphins that swim in the waters off the coast. Pilot whales and dolphins are the most common sightings look for sperm whales and orcas as well.
Get a different perspective on the region’s underwater life by scuba diving or snorkeling. In addition to whales and dolphins, you might spot octopuses, moray eels, sea bass and a variety of turtles and tropical fish. As you might expect, Los Gigantes’ rich marine life also makes it a popular spot for fishing, with tuna and barracuda among the typical catches.
Walk around the town’s pretty marina, where you’ll find numerous bars, cafés and restaurants. With the island of La Gomera visible on the horizon, this waterfront area is a spectacular place to watch the sun set while sipping a cold drink.
Differing from some of the other beaches on the island, Los Gigantes’ has the black-sand Playa Los Guios. Enjoy this pleasant place to go for a swim or to simply admire the surrounding scenery. Head to nearby Crab Island for more secluded swimming and sunbathing.
Los Gigantes is located on the southwestern coast of Tenerife. Reach the area by bus from Los Cristianos and Puerto de la Cruz.
