Manchester

A modern building with a curved facade and large windows. There are cars parked in front and a sculpture on the sidewalk.
A cathedral interior with a red carpet, tall arched ceilings, and a large stained glass window at the far end.
A modern building with a brown facade and glass windows.
A museum exhibit with historical banners and informational displays.
A historic building with intricate Gothic architecture, including pointed arches and detailed stonework.
Canary Wharf of the North is a maze of futuristic structures where some of the world’s most famous companies are based.

Visit Spinningfields to explore the financial center of Manchester, where tall, glassy skyscrapers stand beside some of the city’s most historic buildings. Often compared with London’s thriving Canary Wharf business district, this modern zone also has a great range of restaurants and bars. Spot the array of household-name firms gracing the façades of the modern towers in this hub of innovation.

Among the 165 companies with major offices here are the Royal Bank of Scotland and HSBC Bank. Spot Barclays, Deloitte and Grant Thornton International, among other big names. Admire the exceptional façade of 1 The Avenue, with its blend of steel and glass mirrors. Marvel at the modern form of the Manchester Civil Justice Centre, a futuristic behemoth that was built in 2007.

For a look back at the area’s roots, head to the People’s History Museum. It traces the history of democracy in Britain, with exhibits on social justice and radical movements. Relax on the charming riverside terrace of its Left Bank café. Nearby, study the neo-Gothic Victorian architecture of The John Rylands Library.

Head to the Manchester Opera House for everything from comedy and tribute bands to family Christmas shows and musicals. One of the largest theaters in England, the opera house has a seating capacity of 1,920. For something completely different, climb up the Vertical Chill indoor ice wall.

Spinningfields is a small district on the southern bank of the River Irwell, as it passes through the heart of Manchester. Travel to the Salford Central railway station and walk south for a few minutes to get to this zone between the Northern Quarter and Castlefield. While you’re in the region, visit some of the other nearby parts of Manchester, including Salford, the Green Quarter and New Islington.
