Matira is at the very southern tip of the island of Bora Bora. It is seemingly very remote, but actually fairly easy to access once you are on this French Polynesian island. Consider staying at one of the resort hotels clustered in the area.
Bask in the sun on the white sugary sands next to the blues and greens of the ocean waters of the crescent-shaped Matira Beach. Snorkeling is delightful here because the transparent water is warm year-round and colorful fish flit in schools over the ocean bottom and sections of coral. Watch for rays and turtles gliding through the area. The sheltered lagoon rarely gets large waves.
The family-friendly beach has a long, shallow access and plenty of free parking. Arrive early to find a shady spot under palm trees to lay down your blankets and picnic gear and settle in to enjoy the day. Rent a sun umbrella if the naturally shady spots are taken. Get drinks and snacks or a meal at the restaurant at the northern end of the beach or use public restrooms and showers near the southern end. Water shoes are helpful for walking across the small rocks and bits of dead coral. Be sure not to walk on any living coral.
Multiple cruise lines stop at the cruise pier in Vaitape. If you’re staying on the island, check the cruise ship schedules to avoid potential crowds at the popular beach and come for an exceptional sunset after most people have left the sands. If you’re lucky you might hear a local resident singing while playing a ukulele or guitar.
You have several options for getting to Matira. Fly to Bora Bora Airport on the northern tip of the surrounding atoll and take a boat shuttle to the mainland. Rent a car from the dock area of Vaitape or catch the convenient public bus to the beach to arrive in 10 to 15 minutes. If you’re on a cruise ship, arrange an excursion, hire a taxi or ride the bus from Vaitape to get to Matira. Parking and beach access are free.
