Spectacular mosaics that have few equals worldwide await in Ravenna, a quaint city in the northeast of Italy. The intricate works of art are held in such high esteem that the churches that contain them are designated as a UNESCO site. Find many of the mosaic-filled churches in Ravenna’s historic center, also home to the tomb of 13th-century poet Dante Alighieri and alleyways packed with quaint bars and restaurants.
The fourth-century Baptistry of Neon is the oldest surviving structure in Ravenna. The landmark has an octagonal redbrick design. See celebrated mosaics decorating the inner walls. Gaze up at the ceiling mosaic of John the Baptist with a bearded Jesus in the Jordan River.
Walk a few blocks north to the sixth-century Basilica of San Vitale. Look at the elaborate mosaic artwork that covers almost all the interior walls and the ceiling. Next door is the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, home to some of the best-preserved mosaics in the city.While in the historic center, pay a visit to the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo, which dates back to the year 493. Admire mosaic works portraying saints and the parables of Jesus. Note the building’s fusion of Western and Eastern styles.
Dante Alighieri’s Tomb sits just two blocks to the west of the basilica. The 13th-century playwright spent the final years of his life in Ravenna.
To the northeast of the historic center lies the Mausoleum of Theodoric. Amble through the well-maintained garden. Wonder at the roof, made from one large slab of stone.
For a change of pace, take the family to the Mirabilandia Amusement Park. There are thrilling roller coasters and smaller rides for kids. In the evening, dine at one of the enchanting establishments in the historic center. The Ravenna area is famous for its fish, cheeses and array of pasta dishes.
Ravenna is a 52-mile (83.7-kilometer) drive east of the major Italian city of Bologna. It’s also possible to reach Ravenna by ferry the city is just 5 miles (8 kilometers) from the Adriatic Sea.
