The curves of the rivers Xindian and Dahan wrap around the Banqiao district in New Taipei City. This lively cultural hub is graced by green parks, intriguing museums and an iconic night market. As well as visiting Banqiao, be sure to look at the district from afar to see its skyline of neon skyscrapers and futuristic glass structures.
Despite the modern setting, the area contains reminders of times past. The Lin Family Mansion and Garden, for example, belonged to an affluent family that helped shape the city. Study the house’s period décor and explore the garden for its ponds and elegant bridges.
Head to the southern bank of the Dahan River, lined with scenic parkland. Walk across the transparent platform of the Crescent Bridge, its double arch illuminated like a rainbow at night.
With the sun below the horizon, browse the Nanya Night Market, whose stalls are packed with local culinary dishes and games. You can often watch light shows at the nearby New Taipei City Plaza.
The district is also one of the main sports areas in Taipei. Head to Banqiao Stadium, which seats 30,000 spectators. Admire the colorful aesthetic of the stands and watch a game of soccer. Music concerts and other events are held in the stadium, which also has a running track around the field.
Get active in the Xinzhuang Sports Complex, a vast park complete with a swimming pool, athletics zone and gymnasium. Play on the tennis or basketball courts, while your kids have fun at the children’s playground.
The district occupies the core of New Taipei City, which stands on the western border of Taipei. Travel by bus, shuttle or metro to Banqiao Station or Fuzhong Station, which are right in the heart of the area. While you’re visiting, consider exploring the neighboring areas of the Taishan District, the Zhonghe District and the Xinzhuang District.
