For excellent vistas of Sagami Bay, visit Himenosawa Park, a hilly green space in the northwestern corner of Atami. Draping the bumps of its varied topography are flowers of bright and colorful hues that appear to paint the fields in surprising shades. Follow the hiking trails that disappear up hills and push on through the pink-and-green valleys.
Stroll along the many paths to view seasonal flowers. Narcissus, irises, rhododendron and many more completely change the aesthetic of the park depending on the time of year. Visit during the Atami Flower Festival from January to March to view a wide variety of plum blossoms.
Arrive in the Hydrangea Garden and inspect the bright blue and pink floral displays. See the 60,000 plants in the azalea garden. Their colorful blooms spell out the name of the park in Japanese. A pond and artificial waterfall add to the pretty setting.
Enjoy the fresh, cool air on the park’s grassy mounds and in the shade of the trees in its forests. Try to overcome the various obstacles on the trails, including wooden blocks you can climb with the support of a rope. Your kids will love the play areas.
Bring food for a picnic to enjoy with your family in this leafy setting. It has designated eating areas, with barbecue grills available. Join some of the soccer and other sports games taking place in the wide-open spaces.
Entry to the park is free. It is open every day. The park’s office hours are from morning until late afternoon. Visit the ceramic art center when hands-on pottery painting is offered.
