Good neighborhood, spacious room

The room was more like a studio apartment with a kitchen. Old building with a slow elevator, but nice.

Great value

Apparently the product of merging two old apartment complexes, the State Plaza offers a lot of space - both times I have stayed here the room included a kitchen and sitting area. It’s an older complex, so don’t look for sleek styling and glitz in the rooms - but the place was clean and comfortable and the staff very helpful & friendly. On a Thursday night recently I paid less than half the amount my colleagues paid at a nearby ’name brand’ hotel. If there’s a downside to the location - it’s a healthy stroll or a $5 cab ride to the nearest Metro. Otherwise - a great value.

Needs better internet connection!

The internet connection is absolutely terrible. If you are a business person who needs a connection, stay elsewhere until they upgrade. Also, my room was extremely hot. All they could do about it was provide a box fan.

Very comfortable and Convenient

Very nice place to stay, very clean and staff was friendly. Able to walk to everything we wanted to see, 5 minute walk to metro. Nice big rooms and kitchen was a bonus. Bathroom was small, but updated and clean. Separate dressing room made up for the small bathroom.

State Plaza Hotel review

Great service. However, there was no central heater in the room and we could only use 1 portable electric heater. How do they heat this room in winter? The kitchenette was not stocked and needs updating. The restaurant waitstaff was excellent which made up for the menu.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Use the taxis with meters only. Taxis without meters charge way too much, you’ll need to haggle the price.

A good value

My daughter & I stayed here 3 nights and found this hotel very convenient to the Memorials. The Foggy bottom metro was about 4 blocks away and you can even walk down to Georgetown Harbor in about 15-20 minutes. The queen size beds were Soooo comfortable- a real bonus at the end of the day after you’re exhausted from all that walking & sightseeing. We didn’t dine @ the restaurant but noticed that it was always full.Staff was helpfull & having a 24 hr CVS next store was great! We were out & about all day & night so we primarily used the hotel for sleeping/showering. Area was safe and very clean.

Traveler's tip

We used the metro extensively and found it to be quite easy and clean. Used the bus once to go from National Cathedral into Georgetown-no problems there either.

wonderful experience

my boyfriend and i went here for his birthday on a long weekend. we had a wonderful time and were very pleased with our stay. there is a cvs right next to the hotel which is very convenient. we ordered room service one night and it was delicious and nicely prepared. my one criticism would be that i forgot my brush at home and the hotel did not have a complimentary comb like at some larger chain hotels. Overall, we were exptremely pleased with out stay!

Good deal for the money

The hotel is old and somehow far from the bussy area of DC but has great comodities (for the price) difficult to find on other hotels. The main comodity are its roominess and the (separate) kitchen that is equiped with a full size fridge a stove and a sink. They even have some pans, cups, glasses and utensils. There is a restaurant on the 1st floor that serves full breakfasts and dinners but (to me) their prices are a little high.

State Plaza Hotel Washington, DC

Every room is a suite. They have a make-up area outside the bathroom and a full kitchen. Each queen-size bed came with 4 pillows. Only parking was a problem, but it is DC. Overall a lovely place, not far from Georgetown University.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

It is located very close to the monuments, Arlington Cemetery and the Smithsonian.

Oldie but goodie

We were pleased with the hotel, although older, the rooms were updated, spacious, the beds were comfortable, and the staff was extremely helpful. Additionally, it was close to bus/rail service and fun places to eat in the Foggy Bottom area.

Traveler's tip on dining

The Museum of the American Indian is a very worthwhile attraction. It has wonderful displays and the cafeteria-style dining area is well done. A must see!

totally adequate

I went to be close to a specific location. It filled all of my needs at a reasonable cost. Did it have great ambiance and character? not really, but it DID provide a clean, comfortable bed, plenty of space and a coffee maker.

3 goods ! Location, Price and Comfort

Me and my wife stayed at State Plaza for just one night, but it was enought to classify this hotel as a very nice choice. Good location for tourists and non-tourists. The room is very big and comfortable. There is a CVS and a Liquor store at the next door. The service was great also ! We didn’t eat there, so we can’t rate the restaurant.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

The hotel is just a few blocks from the National Park and the Smithsonian Museums complex.

A good deal.

The hotel is in easy walking distance of some good neighborhoods for eating and browsing. It’s an older hotel, but well maintained.

Can’t wait to go back

The hotel was very convenitently located to all of the major attractions. I was there with my son looking at colleges and sightseeing. We did not have a car and could walk everywhere or take the Metro. The Foggy Bottom Metro was about 3 blocks away & the White House about 1 1/2 blocks away. A CVS was next door, a Subway about 1 block away and a grocery store about 3 blocks away at the Watergate Building. The staff was great and very helpful. Any questions or concerns they were more than happy to answer or help. The kitchen had a stove, refrigerator and sink but it was fine for cooking. They provided all eating utensils & pots to cook. The furnishings were a little dated but it was very clean. The beds and pillows were very comfortable. The internet connection was a little slow but free. We were there in July, in the heat of the summer and the air conditioning worked great. I would definetly stay there again.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

To save money, get snacks from the CVS next door and groceries from the Watergate Bldg. Take a backpack during the day with food and drinks. All of the museums will let you in. It is hot if you are walking. Get a pass to the Metro. It will pay for itself if you don’t mind walking. A taxi to the airport was inexpensive and fast. The Metro will take you to the airport if you don’t mind the 3 block walk with your suitcases. There are alot of people who do it, so you won’t be alone.

very good hotel and conveniently located

my family and i stayed at this hotel at the end of July 2009. it is in a good location and the room is well equipped with a kitchenette including a full size refrigerator and coffee maker with complimetary coffee. it was not a difficult or far walk to the metro which is how we got around throughout our 3 day stay. you feel very safe in the area which is full of students and people walking around. i highly recommend ths hotel to families.

Nice place to stay

Nice location, not far from monuments and the mall. For wide choise of restaurants you would have to get a taxi but they were very available.

Nice hotel for the price, across from George Washington University

The staff of the State Plaza was superb - so helpful. My son and I arrived after midnight; seeing we were a Mother & Son traveling together, to our surprise, the front desk clerk upgraded our room to a Suite, because she was nice and apparently it was available for the 4 nights we were staying. This hotel is not The Ritz, but, for the price, was perfect for us in D.C. Next to a CVS, bus line, 3 blocks from Metro. We had a great stay there - recommend!!

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

We purchased groceries at CVS; ate breakfast in the hotel, fixed sandwiches to take into D.C. for lunches, and saved our $$ for dinners out. Favorite dining was in Georgetown, a $7 cab ride away.

Oldie but goodie

Great for those who want the extra room and kitchenette. It’s a bit funky in the lay-out with entrances on two streets but fairly convenient and the price was right.

Ideal spot, in my opinion.

I was staying in another DC hotel for four nights before transferring to the State Plaza, and so I can say with authority that it is a great value in addition to being a very nice place. The only problem I could see would be for people who really can’t handle stairs at all. The elevator is up about four stairs from the lobby. Otherwise, not a single thing to complain about. Some people complain about things that don’t bother me, I suppose. The bathroom was small and the tile colors dated, but it reminded me of my grandparents’ house and was immaculate. The fixtures are all high quality and don’t need replacement anyway. Really nice soaps and lotions there too! The suite-style set-up with the kitchen is ideal for a longer stay. I didn’t take advantage, but can imagine wanting to if I had been there all week - even a full size fridge! And don’t take in-room coffee for granted - the State Plaza provided it, and the hotel where I stayed across town did not. Same price both places. The hotel is right next to a nice, 24-hour CVS and is an easy walk from Foggy Bottom/GW Metro Station too. Right near the Metro is a GW food court with natural food store, Dunkin Donuts, and more. Unless I missed something, you can’t go wrong with this place. I will certainly go back!

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Only a short walk to Kennedy Center and Constitution Hall, and easy access to a nice neighborhood Metro station. If you’re an energetic walker, you can do a lot of the capitol sites from here too: Vietnam & Lincoln Memorials, and much more.
