If you go to the Great Wall of China, you’ll likely visit Badaling, one of the most popular parts of the wall. This section dating back to the early 16th century was built by the Ming Dynasty to protect the Juyongguan Pass, an area of strategic importance. Walk along the top of the wall for stunning views across the green hilly countryside.
See how the wall meanders up, down and around the surrounding hills. Climb up the steep steps of the Great Wall of China Juyongguan and see the tiered gate that served as a northern entrance to Beijing. Varied temples and towers adorn the adjacent terrain, while sculptures decorate the Cloud Platform at the top of the wall.
Enter The Great Wall Museum of China to learn about the history behind these extraordinary ramparts. Its nine exhibition halls provide information about the Ming Dynasty and the defensive functions of the wall.
Visit the nearby Badaling Wildlife Park, where you can see giraffes, bears and lions. The Badaling National Forest Park has scenic nature trails. Marvel at the bright colors of the Red Leaves Scenic Area and appreciate the wonderful spring blooms of the Qinglong Valley Scenic Area.
Head northeast to the Great Wall at Shixia Pass for a quieter and more serene experience. A little out of the way, the wall here has fewer visitors.
Note that this part of the wall was constructed in 1505 and restored in 1957. It was the first section of the wall to open to visitors.
Badaling is in the northern part of the Huyu Natural Scenic Area, in the northeastern part of China. From central Beijing, drive north for 40 miles (64 kilometers) to get here in 1 to 2 hours. While you’re here, travel to nearby attractions such as the Shuhuashan Scenic Area, the Duijiuyu Natural Scenic Area and the Songshan Nature Reserve.
