Fishing, hiking and seaside relaxation are some of the highlights of a visit to this attractive Coos Bay coastal community.

Located just inside the entrance to Coos Bay, the small fishing village of Charleston is an ideal jumping-off point for fabulous beaches, beautiful countryside and ocean exploration. Sunbathe and swim at sandy havens, watch storms from clifftops and enjoy deep-sea fishing trips off the southern Oregon coast.

Visit the harbor area in the morning to watch the fishing fleet depart for the day. Charter a boat and head out to sea on a fishing or crabbing expedition. If you don't catch anything you can purchase a fresh catch from the floating seafood market at Fisherman's Wharf or dine at one of the restaurants along the bay. While you’re in the neighborhood, stop at the Charleston Marine Life Center to see starfish, octopuses and other examples of life off Oregon's coast.

View more of the area by driving the Cape Arago Beach Loop, a 14-mile (22-kilometer) route that encompasses state parks, beaches and landmark buildings. Stretch out on the beaches of Sunset Bay State Park and wander through the botanical gardens of Shore Acres State Park.

Bring binoculars for your visit to Cape Arago State Park to observe sea lions on Shell Island. This park is also a popular destination for watching storms. Stand on the cliffs and be amazed by huge waves that can reach up to 100 feet (30 meters) in height.

If you’re feeling energetic, hike any of the parks' trails. A network of walking routes also connects these three areas of outstanding natural beauty.

Other points of interest along the Cape Arago Beach Loop include Bastendorff Beach and the viewpoint to see Cape Arago Lighthouse, which sits on top of a cliff on a small island. After your excursions, relax with a taste of local rum at Stillwagon Distillery.

To experience Charleston's coastal charms, drive or take the bus from Salem. The capital of Oregon is about 185 miles (300 kilometers) north of the fishing village.
