Kalmus Beach

Soak up the sun, comb the sands for pretty shells or soar across the waves while windsurfing at this breezy beach.

Kalmus Beach is a wide and well-equipped stretch of white-sand beach. Spend fun days here engaging in exciting watersports or just relaxing as you lie on the soft sand.

The beach is named after the inventor of Technicolor film, Herbert Kalmus, who once owned this plot of land. It has since become a much-frequented beach with a range of visitor-friendly facilities, including restrooms and showers. Bring the whole family along to this safe stretch, where lifeguards are on duty during the summer up until Labor Day.

Join other windsurfers out on the waves. This beach is known as a windsurfing haven due to the favorable conditions. Consistent winds, as well as good water temperatures in the spring, summer and fall seasons, make it an ideal spot to practice the sport. If you want to remain dry, try flying a kite instead. Half of the beach is allocated for activities including windsurfing and kite flying, so there is plenty of room to practice these hobbies.

Casual visitors hoping not to get windswept can enjoy a relaxing day on the other half of the beach, which is less exposed to the elements. Find a patch of sand for sunbathing and wade into the calm, warm waters. You might want to take a book along to keep you entertained or simply gaze out at the ships sailing around the harbor. Look for sea shells as you walk along the beach if you need a change of pace.

The beach has a picnic area where you can eat, so bring food and drinks along to enjoy after surfing the waves or lying in the sun. If you need to purchase food, a snack shack sells a limited selection.

Kalmus Beach has many parking spaces, which can be used for a fee. It is less than a 10-minute drive from Hyannis’ Main Street or you can also walk. On foot, the journey takes about 30 minutes.
