Makai Golf Club is among the most iconic and picturesque courses in Hawaii. The club is known for its eclectic array of activities and the spectacular vistas of ocean cliffs, mountains and lagoons. Play a few rounds to practice your swing and get a sense of the beauty of this vast site.
Use a Makai GolfBoard, a type of individual scooter with a space for clubs and balls, to get around the site in style. These fun buggies are said to speed up the game and make it more exciting. Snap photos of the large, verdant mountains that serve as a picturesque backdrop to your game. Play the course’s signature seventh hole, which includes tricky shots over dramatic cliffs next to the ocean.
For a quicker game, try the nine-hole Woods Course, which winds through the island’s natural forests. Hit a few balls in the practice fairway bunker and target greens with bunkers. Take lessons at the teaching tee to work on your game or learn the basics.
Join the Sunrise Yoga group to start your day feeling fresh. Embark on a Sunset Golf Cart Course to see the course at its most majestic, when the darkening hues of the sky take over the horizon. These daily tours take you through the 18 holes for about 90 minutes, as sunset approaches. Stop at the Makai Grill for snacks and refreshments.
Other stops on the cart tour include the Queen’s Bath tide pool, the Kilauea Lighthouse, Anini Reef and Hanalei Bay. Relax at Puff the Magic Dragon Beach, so-called for its shape. The golf course is a popular choice for weddings and events.
Makai Golf Club takes up a large part of southeastern Princeville toward the northern coast of Kauai Island. It is just north of the small village of Hanalei, where you will find the Hanalei Bridge and the spectacular Hanalei Valley Lookout. Visit other attractions in the area, such as Hideaway Beach and Puu Poa Beach.
