Memphis Zoo

Grizzly bears, African elephants and white rhinos share this expansive terrain in Overton Park, perfect for an outing with children.

Thousands of animals big and small live in the Memphis Zoo, on grounds covering 76 acres (31 hectares). Dating back to 1906, this long-running Memphis institution brings in more than 1 million visitors per year. Look for some of the most exotic and impressive creatures from your list of favorites when you visit this spectacular zoo.

Step into the African Veldt zone to get close to giraffes, elephants and rhinos, as well as antelope and ostriches. The China area is home to cute, furry pandas, while the Dragon’s Lair has Komodo dragons. Spot penguins, monkeys and tropical birds as you move through the park.

Visit the aquarium to see the range of colorful aquatic creatures in the tanks. Let your kids take part in the Zoo Camp during spring break or summer. Birthday parties and school programs can also be organized for little ones.

Embark on a Sunset Safari for adults after dark to learn about nocturnal animals or try one of the similar Twilight Tours. Rest and have a meal at one of the many cafés and restaurants, such as Shakes & Sliders, the Hot Dog Shack and the Snack House. You can also try Zambezi Snacks, the Dragon Wagon and Ray’s Grill.

Buy tickets at the zoo entrance or online. Discounts are available for children and seniors at the zoo, which opens daily from morning until late afternoon. Consider renting the zoo for various ceremonies, including weddings.

In the eastern reaches of the city, find the Memphis Zoo across the northern part of Overton Park. It skirts the eastern boundary of the Evergreen zone. Cycle east from the Downtown Memphis district for about 20 minutes to reach the zoo. You can also drive and leave your vehicle in the parking lot for a fee. Travel through the surrounding park for its various attractions, including the Lenox Bayou, the Rainbow Lake Playground and Veterans Plaza.

The zoo is easy to get to. There is a fee to enter, but it is not that expensive. Adults are $15. Do not know what the fees for children are since I do not have any.
