Located in the Mediterranean Sea off the eastern coast of Spain is a beautiful island with a fantastic coastline and thousands of years of history.

Menorca is the second-largest of Spain’s Balearic Islands. It is an enchanting place of postcard-perfect beaches, ancient monuments and buildings, and a beautiful countryside perfect for walking and cycling. Seek out thousand-year-old megalithic structures, follow a coastal trail around the island and enjoy days of beach relaxation.

The main attraction here is the coastline, with white-sand beaches, deserted coves and rocky bays. Snorkel in the shallow waters of Es Grau, go surfing off Son Bou Beach, the island's longest sandy stretch, and relax on Cala Mitjana, a gorgeous cove bordered by wooded cliffs.

Check out some of Menorca’s other natural attractions. Hike, cycle or ride a horse along the Camí de Cavalls, a 115-mile (185-kilometer) ancient coastal trail that encircles the island. Go bird watching in the wetlands of S'Albufera des Grau Nature Park. Between late January and mid-February witness almond trees in bloom the island has more than 7 million.

At the eastern end of Menorca, perched above a large natural harbor, is the capital, Mahón or Maó. Browse its shops and markets and visit historical buildings. These include the Arch de San Roque, the last remaining part of the city's original defensive walls, and the 18th-century Church of Santa Maria.

The island’s other primary city is Ciutadella, on the western end. Tour ancient buildings in the historic quarter, such as a 14th-century cathedral.

Explore history elsewhere on Menorca. See the Fortress of Isabel II, built in the late 19th century, and the prehistoric settlement of Torre LLafuda. Travel to the megalithic stone monuments that are scattered across the island. These standing stones are homes, defensive structures and burial chambers built by the ancient Talaiotic peoples.

Reach Menorca by flying into the airport just outside Mahón. Alternatively, ferry across from mainland Spain. Get around to the historical sites, cities, beaches and other sites of natural beauty by rental car, taxi or public transportation. Buses run between the major towns and resorts.
