Within 8 minutes you can be out of the city and in the mountains around Bergen. Mount Fløyen is one of the most popular spots to go hiking and picnicking in summer and sledding and cross-country skiing in winter.

Catch the Fløibanen Funicular from the center of Bergen to the top of Mount Fløyen. It leaves every 15 to 30 minutes throughout the year. Enjoy incredible views as you ascend to the upper station, 1,050 feet (320 meters) above sea level.

Disembark to breathe in the clean mountain air and take in views across Bergen and its historic wharf, through the fjords and out to the islands off the coast. Active travelers can bring comfortable shoes and hike to the top instead. The 50-minute walk is well signposted.

Plan to spend anywhere from a few hours to a full day on Mount Fløyen. A café, restaurant and kiosk provide all the food and drink you might need for your day out. Eat in at the restaurant or buy supplies from the kiosk and move on. There are picnic areas, lakes and family attractions all within easy walking distance of the funicular.

The walk to Skomakerdiket, or Shoemaker’s Dike, takes just a few minutes and is suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. The beautiful lake is surrounded by picnic tables, barbecues and fire pits. Borrow a canoe free of charge in summer or bring your own equipment and go sledding and cross-country skiing in winter. Another popular spot is Floysletten, a large grassy area with picnic huts. Stop by Troll Forest on the walk there. The mystical forest has statues and fun activities for kids.

Come to the mountain equipped with comfortable walking shoes and wet-weather clothing. The weather can be unpredictable and heavy fog is common. Always bring a map and compass. Pick up a hiking map from the ticket office at the lower funicular station.
