Enjoy awesome coastal views as you walk along the top of cliffs to get close to this early 20th-century lighthouse.

Located on the most westerly tip of the Isle of Skye is Neist Point Lighthouse, which has been signaling to ships since 1909. Hike along a clifftop path to reach the navigational aid on its remote rocky perch.

Allow at least 2 hours for your visit and bring comfortable walking shoes and a coat. The walk is not suitable in windy, rainy or misty conditions, so before you set out on your trip, check the weather forecast for the day.

From the parking area, follow the 1.4-mile (2.2-kilometer) single track concrete path that winds along the clifftop to the lighthouse. The route is steep in places and takes approximately 20 minutes without making any stops. However, it’s worth pausing to enjoy the views of the surrounding cliffs.

The lighthouse stands 141 feet (43 meters) above sea level and is part of a compound that includes several cottages. Note that the lighthouse is not open to the public, so spend a few minutes exploring the nearby area, taking care near the edge of the cliffs. Look over to see the landing area where boats used to drop off supplies when the lighthouse was manned. It has been automated since 1990. There is also a field of stone towers, built by walkers.

During the summer months, look out to sea to spot dolphins, basking sharks, whales and occasionally orcas. The best time to see pods is in June and July, especially minke whales that often swim very close to the shore, according to reports. This is also a good spot for birdwatching species such as black guillemots, razorbills and gannets.

When you are ready to leave, return to the parking area along the same path that brought you to the lighthouse.

Neist Point Lighthouse is located 11 miles (18 kilometers) from the village of Dunvagen and 33 miles (53 kilometers) from Portree, the island’s capital. There is no public transportation to the lighthouse, so reach it by rental car or taxi.
