Athens, which is the national capital, is situated 210 miles (338 kilometers) northwest of Nisyros, while Rhodes lies 55 miles (89 kilometers) to the southeast.
While it may be a temptation to limit yourself to just the local sights while vacationing in Nisyros, keep in mind that Dodecanese Islands' numerous natural sights, cities and towns are never more than a day trip away. Tilos, is 14 miles (23 kilometers) to the northwest. Go there to visit the Charkadio Cave and Tilos Port.
Grab some transportation and visit Kos, a retail and transport hub for the region, situated some 15 miles (24 kilometers) from Nisyros. This bigger city has a wide range of points of interest, such as Mastichari Beach, Kos Thermes and Castle Palaio Pyli. Kos has much of interest for those happy to hang around a little longer. Roman Odeon Amphitheater, Antimachia Castle and Plaka Forest are some of the other points of interest not to miss.
For a budget outdoors activity that everyone will like, take the time to check out the region's popular open-air exhibits and open-air museums. Houses of the holy are great windows into a community's big beating heart. The monasteries of Dodecanese Islands are no exception.
Water-based sports are a common pastime here. Take the opportunity to go fishing or wind surfing; Dodecanese Islands has some perfect spots for it. If you're not the kind of traveler to take holidays purely to put your feet up, the area around Nisyros offers a number of adventure activities like rock climbing and hiking.
