Three grand civic buildings line the riverfront and stand as reminders to the city’s maritime heritage. Admire the architectural beauty and visit superb museums.

Pier Head and the Three Graces is quintessential to the architectural landscape of Liverpool. Located on the banks of the River Mersey, this historic district forms part of the UNESCO-listed Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City. Marvel at the majestic beauty of the three buildings known collectively as the Three Graces. Explore museums, take photos next to statues of luminaries and ride a famous riverboat at Pier Head and the Three Graces.

Once Europe’s tallest structure, the iconic Royal Liver Building is a mix of baroque, art nouveau and Byzantine influences. Standing proud on the clock towers are copper sculptures of the mythical liver bird, which is the emblem of the city and Liverpool Football Club. Inside, the Royal Liver Building 360 exhibition begins with a historical account of the building. Ride the elevators to the upper floors for panoramic city views.

Adjacent to here and the middle of the Three Graces is the Cunard Building, which is an elegant fusion of Italian Renaissance and Greek Revival designs. It houses the British Music Experience, where the evolution of the British music industry comes to life. Browse original costumes and memorabilia, learn dance moves with a virtual instructor and play instruments. Spot the maritime references that adorn the ornate facade of the Port of Liverpool Building.

Stroll from the Three Graces towards the waterfront, pausing to take a photo at the Beatles Statue. Look for an equestrian monument of King Edward VII and a telescope sculpture, which commemorates 17th-century astronomer Jeremiah Horrocks. From the ferry terminal, passenger ferries cross the River Mersey to Birkenhead as they have done since the 1100s. Be sure to experience more city history at the Museum of Liverpool.

Pier Head and the Three Graces sit at the heart of the Liverpool Waterfront, close to central Liverpool. Several public bus lines stop nearby and the nearest train station is James Street. You can visit the waterfront at anytime of the day, although its advisable to check the opening hours of each attraction before arriving.
