South Side Slopes
Parks with playgrounds and historic religious buildings adorn the bumpy streets of Pittsburgh’s upper layer, overlooking the skyscrapers of the city center.

South Side Slopes comprises a hilltop overlooking the rivers and districts of Pittsburgh. Its jumble of houses is dotted between the trees, rising high above the monuments of the city. Climb up the steps to reach the top of the hill to enjoy the views and pick out your favorite attractions from the Pittsburgh skyline.

Admire the many houses interspersed within a network of open-air staircases and parkland. Consider the extraordinary views these houses provide. As you make your way around this sloped district, you’ll see all types of impressive buildings. Marvel at the imposing façade of the 19th-century St. Paul of the Cross Monastery. Gaze up at the tall spire rising from the center of Saint Michael’s Roman Catholic Church.

On a warm, sunny day, bring your kids to Quarry Field, which has a playground and a basketball court. Wander through the Bandi Schaum Community Garden to see the variety of plants and crops planted by locals. Follow the various trails meandering through the scenic and serene grounds. At the southern end of the vast green area are the Arlington Baseball Field and the Arlington Playground, which has a baseball area and a spray park for kids.

Participate in the annual October event of StepTrek, when groups gather to hike up and down the public staircases. The steps taking you up the hills are classified in Pittsburgh as official streets. Enjoy the dizzying views of the city center’s skyscrapers from Eleanor Street Park.

South Side Slopes is stacked behind South Side Flats, in the southeastern corner of Pittsburgh. Numerous public staircases lead from the lower level to the top of the slopes. Travel by bus up to one of the stops at the top of the hill. Explore the surrounding area for other districts such as Arlington Heights, the Technology Center and Arlington.

Worn appearing room, toilet paper in toilet making me question how much the room was cleaned ahead of time. Reminded me of a hostel. Honestly, wouldn’t pay more than $75 a night to stay there. Check-in was easy. Valet parking easy. Would not stay again.
