Pittsburgh

A street with historic buildings, including a law office and a Ukrainian home.
A staircase leading up to a building with yellow autumn leaves, surrounded by greenery and a clear sky.
A carousel with horses and riders, a fire truck, and a building with windows.
A street with cars, a Mexican restaurant, and a brick building.
A logo with the text "The Milkshake Factory" and "EST FACTORY 1914".
Historic warehouses and theaters stand in the shadow of South Side Slopes, with parks and trails lining the river and bars filling the center.

With its variety of nightlife options and restaurants, South Side Flats is a lively and entertaining part of Pittsburgh. Majestic 19th-century buildings line its streets, adding a historic element to this central riverside zone. Stroll along the Three Rivers Heritage Trail on the southern bank of the Monongahela River and enjoy the views of the Birmingham Bridge.

Sit on a bench and read a book in Southside Riverfront Park. Admire the sculptures in the adjacent South Side Dog Park and launch a canoe from the Public Boat Ramp. You can rent boats from the Venture Outdoors activity center, which also has bikes and hiking gear.

While you walk through the leafy riverside area, you’ll see the hilly reminder of South Side Slopes to your south. Watch a local game of football at the George K. Cupples Stadium, at the western end of the district. From the arena, stroll east along the main road and stop at the South Side Welcome Center for a variety of events and activities.

Inspect the Romanesque design of the South Side Market Building, which resembles a large, red warehouse. Study the various works available for purchase in the South Bank Galleries and watch a play in the intimate setting of the City Theatre Company.

Among the highlights in the zone is the Rex Theater, a former vaudeville auditorium constructed in 1905. Watch modern bands perform on its historic stage. Stay in the neighborhood into the evening and enjoy drinks at some of the bars.

The South Side Flats area stands on the southern bank of the Monongahela River, a little east of central Pittsburgh. Arrive at the Station Square metro stop and walk east for 10 minutes to enter the district. Travel by bus to any of the stops along the main highway running through the area.

While you’re in this part of the city, visit other surrounding areas such as South Side Slopes, the Technology Center and Arlington Heights.
