Pittsburgh

The Mellon Institute at Carnegie Mellon University with classical columns and a Gothic cathedral in the background.
A dinosaur statue in front of a historic building with inscriptions.
A park with a glass greenhouse, benches, and a tall building in the background.
A fence covered with numerous padlocks.
A city street lined with autumn trees, a speed limit sign, and a USPS mail truck.
From the Carnegie complex to the French revival chapel, this student haven offers an eclectic and historic destination beside a vast park.

With its three universities and many museums, Oakland is one of Pittsburgh’s most innovative and cultural hubs. It is split into several parts, with a pair of historic districts lined with architectural gems. Enjoy the student ambiance around the campuses of the University of Pittsburgh, Carlow University and Carnegie Mellon University.

Wander along the colleges’ adjacent streets and choose from an eclectic variety of culinary delights. For an architectural contrast, make your way through the Schenley Farms Historic District, the Oakland Square Historic District and the Oakland Civic Center Historic District.

Learn about the region’s past by exploring the exhibits of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, which stands in an imposing building in North Oakland. It was set up by local industrialist Andrew Carnegie, who is responsible for several Pittsburgh institutions. Study the works lining the walls of the adjacent Carnegie Museum of Art and inspect the tomes of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.

Marking the Carnegie complex’s western side is Schenley Plaza, where you’ll find the Stephen Foster Memorial and the Cathedral of Learning. Marvel at the gothic revival design of this tower that rises from the campus of the University of Pittsburgh.

A short walk northeast stands Heinz Memorial Chapel, a non-sectarian chapel with remarkable stained-glass windows.

Get a sense of the local culture in Market Square. Watch basketball in the Petersen Events Center.

Oakland covers the eastern side of Pittsburgh, along the western edge of Schenley Park. Travel by bus to a stop in the heart of the area, which is on the northern side of the Monongahela River.

While you’re in this part of the city, consider visiting nearby quarters such as Terrace Village, the Hill District and the South Side Flats.
