Things to do

Westwind must see attractions

1. Cable Beach

Cable Beach, the most popular stretch of coast on New Providence Island, is the ideal escape from downtown Nassau, the nation’s capital. Located just minutes west of the city, the 4 miles (6 kilometers) of coast are home to some of the island’s most luxurious resorts. Those staying at the hotels can walk straight from their rooms into the turquoise water, while day visitors can stretch out on the white sand. Spend the day relaxing at the water’s edge, scouting for local marine life beneath the surface or trying your hand at poker in one of the beachfront casinos.

2. Cabbage Beach

Paradise Island’s major resorts have centered themselves around one of the most idyllic strips of coast in the Bahamas. Cabbage Beach has 2 miles (3 kilometers) of soft white sand, crystal-clear water and countless resorts, bars and restaurants lining the shore. The near end of the beach is busy, with a lively atmosphere and plenty of activities to occupy the family. The far, northwestern end of the beach is more isolated. Those looking to escape the crowds will love this section of Cabbage Beach, where a more relaxing beach experience can be enjoyed.

3. Aquaventure

When Paradise Island’s largest resort, Atlantis, began its expansion in 2007, it included one of the largest water parks in the world: Aquaventure. It features more than 20 swimming areas spread across 11 different pools. The park is family friendly, with special pools for toddlers, but also caters to an adult market with waterside DJs, gaming and bars. Waterslides are scattered throughout the park. Enjoy the special experience of swimming alongside the local marine life in many of the pools.

Up to 500 vendors sell a diverse selection of items, ranging from handmade crafts to souvenir T-shirts. Negotiate for bargains as you browse the straw items and soak up the busy atmosphere.

5. National Art Gallery of the Bahamas

Introduce yourself to the colorful visual culture of the Bahamas at one of the largest collections of Bahamian art in the world. The National Art Gallery of the Bahamas is housed in a refurbished 1860s villa. The two-story gallery showcases significant works from local painters, photographers and sculptors. Regular temporary exhibits bring work from around the Caribbean to Nassau and the on-site library is a great place to discover rare books on local history. Widely considered the most important gallery in the Bahamas, the National Art Gallery is a must-see spot for anyone with an interest in art or local culture.
