"If I had to describe the hotel in a single word, it would be impeccable.
But even that wouldn't do it justice. Our stay was nothing short of extraordinary — an experience we’ll cherish for the rest of our lives with deep joy and gratitude. From the accommodations and location to the weather, cuisine, and overall atmosphere, everything was truly exceptional. And Ague Cave was the perfect finishing touch — the icing on the cake.
The rooms were thoughtfully and flawlessly designed, every detail carefully considered. Each breakfast was beautifully prepared and presented, with delicious food that exceeded all expectations. The staff were caring, attentive, and genuinely kind.
A special mention must go to our hosts, Paola and Francesco. Their warmth and generosity left a lasting impression. Paola’s time and attention during our check-in was both unexpected and unforgettable. She made us feel truly welcome from the very beginning. It’s clear how much pride and love they’ve poured into creating such a remarkable place — and rightly so.

While there’s no on-site parking (common in Matera), the hotel directed us to a nearby lot and arranged transport—Antonio, our driver, was fantastic. Check-in was smooth, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, answering all our questions and even making dinner reservations for us. The location is very central, perfect for exploring the Sassi. We were pleasantly surprised with a free room upgrade—absolutely stunning and well equipped. Highly recommend this hotel!"

Parking is free and easy to find. The hotel picks you up and takes you into the city.
The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. On the day of our departure we needed to leave very early and they had a full breakfast ready for us and gave us a ride back to our car with no problem at all.
The location at the edge of the cliff is absolutely stunning and the views are unparalleled.
The rooms themselves are unique and very well appointed. The bathroom in our room needs to be repainted and the loft where the kids slept got very hot. But other than that we can't find a single fault with this lovely spot in a beautiful city!

The staff was lovely and really elevated a great stay to exceptional. Antonio, the manager, was brimming with enthusiasm for his city and the hotel, sharing history of both. He recommended the fantastic Osteria al Casale restaurant on the cliffside for dinner which served excellent food and was nicely away from the hordes. Maristella is as sweet as she is adorable. So helpful and gracious.
The included breakfast was ample and there was quite a variety, from savory options to pastries. The dining room is stunning. Loved it!
We stayed in the family apartment which exceeded expectations. The main room is spacious even with sofa bed opened. There is a separate sitting area with another sofa and coffee table which was very useful. The sofa bed was comfortable and big enough for two teens to fit comfortably. The master bedroom was roomy and the bed super comfortable. It was only missing a full length mirror. Adding a barn door on the master bedroom to provide privacy from kids staying in the main area would be a bonus. There is also a kitchenette with refrigerator in the apartment.
The bathroom is modern and functional. The shower is small so I shared with the manager that a shelf is needed to hold shampoo/soap. This is really the only critique on an otherwise magical place. Highly recommend. "

"Location was so unique overlooking the Sassi . Nighttime was magical. We arrived early and Davide welcomed us; nothing was too much trouble! He arranged for us to have a coffee and custard brioche as we had missed breakfast that morning due to an early start. We could not have arrived on a better day as it was a special Festa and we were invited to see the fireworks from the balcony at 1am - front row seats!! Breakfast included a variety of Continental options. They even prepared breakfast for us on the last day, when we had to leave early.

"The location is a little away from the main part of town, it's tucked away through the little alleyways. You'll need to be good with stairs to get to and from this place. There is no view from the ground floor rooms. The room we stayed in was very nice, the space is large and cool. There is AC/Heat units in each room. Our room only had a front door with an overhead window for daylight. The shower is huge and unique. The toilet area is on the other side of the room from the shower, there is only a curtain to separate the toilet from the room. The breakfast is what you select from the listing they provide. If you're there for multiple days, you'll get the same breakfast daily unless you ask for something different. Best part of this place is how quiet it is. "

"After a tour understanding the history of the caves in Matera, it is a humbling experience to stay with all the modern amenities of electricity, running water and yes, internet! Lorella has made this a clean,cutely decorated apartment, it’s in a great spot to walk everywhere. Be aware that it’s a bit of a hike to the property, so be in good health. Although, lorella came to meet us on the Main Street and hauled half the stuff up. Another great aspect of a true host is responsiveness. Our first afternoon had challenges with the internet and power outages. She was in communication all the time helping us. Thank you, Lorella. You made this a magical experience. "
