Falling cascades, a dam and picturesque trails that edge a dramatic gorge can be found beside this enchanting 19th-century town.

Tallulah Falls is a charming village that serves as an idyllic base to discover the surrounding Tallulah Gorge State Park. With a church and several quaint attractions, the town is located on the southern side of the Tallulah Falls Dam. Stay at accommodations in the town and make your way to the trails, falls and interpretive center of the park.

Visit the Tallulah Falls Baptist Church and consider attending a service to get a sense of the local culture. Chat with the people about the history of the town and spot the post office and police department. Enjoy stunning views of Tallulah Lake, on the northern side of the town. The Tallulah Falls Dam, which was constructed in 1914, makes for quite a sight.

Cross the water for the Tallulah Gorge Interpretive Center, whose exhibits provide information about the region’s history. Follow the Hurricane Falls trail around the edge of the gorge and climb the steps to an impressive suspension bridge. The Shortline Trailhead is a flat and accessible path for walking, running or cycling along the old railway lines that skirt the river.

The town was incorporated in 1885, becoming a thriving resort area at the beginning of the 1900s. It takes its name from its eponymous waterfall. Look for familiar settings after you watch the 1972 movie Deliverance, which was filmed here. The town was also the inspiration for U.S. actress Tallulah Bankhead’s first name. She starred in Alfred Hitchcock’s Lifeboat in 1944.

Find the town in the heart of Tallulah Gorge State Park, in the northeastern corner of Georgia in the counties of Rabun and Habersham. Drive north from Athens for 65 miles (105 kilometers) to get here in about 80 minutes. Explore the surroundings for other nearby gems such as Chattahoochee National Forest, Nantahala National Forest and Pisgah National Forest.
