This settlement is the island’s second-largest urban center and provides access to many of Phu Quoc’s most attractive coastal features. Explore the city’s fishing industry, enjoy pristine beaches nearby or take a daytrip to the archipelago of beautiful islands just off Phu Quoc’s southern coast.
An Thoi offers many attractions of its own. Take a tour and see the city’s fish sauce factories, which produce the island’s signature recipe, or engage with the history at the Coconut Tree Prison. This infamous detention center was used by the French during their occupation and later by the Americans during the Vietnam War.
A dark past, however, has not dampened the city’s new focus on fun in the sun. Journey to nearby Bai Khem or Bai Sao beaches and relax on their unspoiled sands. Be sure to explore the area, as the surroundings feature some of the most beautiful coastlines and headlands on the island.
Charter a boat from An Thoi’s port and take a trip to some of the 15 nearby islands. These trips can take half to full days and include some of the region’s best snorkeling and diving opportunities. Spot bamboo sharks and scorpion fish around Hon Dua or explore the long untouched beaches on Hon Thom, the largest island of the archipelago.
Back in An Thoi, pick up ingredients for dinner at its sizable fresh food market. Alternatively, find a restaurant or a bar along the beach and watch as ferries and fishermen return to the port.
Drive to An Thoi from Phu Quoc International Airport in about 20 minutes. The city offers the convenience and comfort of hotels, taxis, banks, travel agents and even a medical clinic. Despite this development, the city is relatively small, so expect limitations to finding a comprehensive supermarket or Western goods. Boat tours and motorbike rentals can often be organized through hotels.
