The staff went through a bit of a charade saying maintenance had gone home (2pm Saturday) but would be back first thing in Sunday so they’d try turning it on from ‘here’ (the desk). However we found later from 2 people staying there that they’d had exactly the same thing in that room the day before and were moved. So we were put in there knowingly. We went out for a while and in return were offered a heater or a double room. If we moved room we would have to move again the next day either back to that room or on again to a twin. We (my adult daughter and I ) didn’t want to share a bed so we opted for the heater which didn’t make much difference really. The next day maintenance went in while we were at breakfast and pronounced the acu broken. We were asked to pack and leave our items available and we would be moved while we were out - that happened. Although the heating in the new room worked, the instructions with it were for old controllers and so we couldn’t work the heating. I phoned my husband (an industrial heating engineer) who told me how to manually switch the heating on and off and told me the controller seemed to be for integrated heat pump systems - not room heating. We didn’t get housekeeping 2 days but I couldn’t bear to get involved in THAT one. The sink didn’t run properly so I put lots of boiling water down it which helped. Biggest problem (after the heating) was no fridge. However, they could use some attention re cleanliness: lots of dust on the baseboards and door trim that was so thick it had to be noted; and soap dispenser was broken off the wall and not repaired. Liked the Nespresso machine and available teas in the room, comfy bed, and wonderful bathtub that was extra long. The breakfast had decent selection. However, the haggis (while good in flavor) and baked sunny eggs stuck to the teeth and throat and deemed inedible. Dinner was only available in the bar with a limited menu, but was good as were the drinks. The rooms were clean and comfortable, which made it easy to relax after a day out in the city. The staff were consistently friendly and welcoming, adding to the overall positive experience. Breakfast was very good, with a nice selection to start the day. A special mention goes to Edward from the restaurant team, who was especially friendly and attentive. Beautiful lobby and big and clean guest rooms. Loved that they actually had a real coffee maker in the room, along with complimentary sweets. Check in was easy and we were able to have them hold our luggage (no cost) as we had to turn in our rental car. Staff was friendly and we were provided special treats at check in. We paid for the buffet breakfast, which was very good and offered a nice array of food options. Also do not expect a strong shower. The shower head and the water pressure was mediocre. For us the bed itself was a bit small, it definitely is the smallest size acceptable as a double bed and for is it was just small. Especially my husband being a taller man found it small. The linnens were always changed and clean (sheets and towels) though so that is a plus. Also we were provided with cans of still water which was a very nice and appreciated touch. Reception was excellent very capable staff and always very friendly. On our last day we asked to leave our luggage there so we could explore the city without the hassle of trolley’s and everything was handeld very well. All in all a good solid stay for a citytrip in Edinburgh. It is a good walk away from everything but the plus side is it is nice and quiet during the night and early mornings. The staff is very helpful and the location is wonderful (can walk to the middle of town in one direction and Arthur's seat in the other). One point which was odd - the underside of the rubber mat for the bathtub had quite a bit of dark mold. I turned it in at the desk and it was replaced by one that had quite a bit of long black hair on the underside (they are in little zippered covers). I finally got a clean one, but yuck. Other than that - lovely stay, room otherwise clean - they just need to inspect all of those mats.
