Not just another Oregon Coast beach town, this charming community on the northern part of the Oregon Coast is also known for its art, culture and great cuisine.

As you explore the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway, be sure to visit Manzanita. Just south of Cannon Beach, Manzanita has a fabulous view of Neahkahnie Mountain to the north. To the south, Nehalem Bay awaits your exploration. According to locals, Oregon’s 14th governor, Oswald West, was so moved by Manzanita’s scenery that he decided that all Oregon beaches should be free and open to all.

The ocean is a big attraction in Manzanita, but don’t overlook the lively arts and culture scene. Grab a Manzanita Art Walk Guide, then wander through the community to visit art galleries, artist studios and the Hoffman Center for the Arts at your own pace. Check the arts center calendar to see if a live musical performance, film screening, author reading or art workshop is happening during your visit.

After admiring the town’s arts appeal, head to nearby Nehalem Bay State Park, where creativity takes the form of naturally occurring sand dunes and driftwood sculptures. A forested 1.8-mile-long (2.8-kilometer) path between the ocean and the bay offers opportunities for walkers or bikers to watch for grazing deer and elk. The park is also the start for guided horseback riding tours. If you prefer to surf, visit Short Sands Beach at Oswald West State Park.

Explore Manzanita’s excellent culinary scene, from enticing bakeries to fine-dining restaurants. Stock up on gourmet picnic items, then head to Manzanita Beach. During low tide, check for marine creatures at the tidepools at the north end of the beach. Wear layers, as days can be quite breezy. Bring binoculars so you can scan the skies and horizon for bald eagles and migrating whales.

Here in the shadow of a mountain, on a sheltered bay and fronting the expanse of the Pacific, Manzanita is a jewel on the Oregon Coast. Choose from a variety of accommodations that celebrate the outdoorsy vibe of this oceanside village, just a 1.5-hour drive from Portland.
