Top Orkney Hotel Reviews

Albert Hotel

Albert Hotel

10/10 Excellent
"The hotel has clearly just been refurbished and the entrance area was very nice indeed. I was later checking in and had to wait a wee bit until helped by a member of staff - wasn’t a huge issue for me though. The room itself was lovely - spotless and stylish. Didn’t have breakfast as I was leaving early."

The Orkney Hotel

The Orkney Hotel

10/10 Excellent
"We were very lucky because both times we parked at the hotel, we got one of the 2 slots in front of the hotel, so we didn't have to try and find the additional parking lot, but the staff did give us a map to find it. Keep in mind that there is no lift, so depending on your floor you need to carry your bags up. The 23kg bag was not much fun to take up and then down 2 flights of stairs. The food for breakfast was very good whether the cereal/yogurt/fruit or the from the menu. The staff in the breakfast area were really good. The front desk is a little wonky because even the person in the office there isn't as helpful as the front desk clerk who isn't there most of the time, but who is very helpful when you can get them. The WiFi isn't extremely fast, but I was able to work, especially in the library where there was power. It would be nice to have higher chairs with tables other than coffee table height. Even in the room there isn't a desk to work at. We were overall very happy with the stay and the Italian restaurant across the street was perfect for eating early."

Kirkwall Youth Hostel

Kirkwall Youth Hostel

10/10 Excellent
"Perfect 'utilitarian' accommodation for a fan of hostels ... ... The building is not particularly attractive and the rooms are basic and afford no good views ... However, the beds are comfortable, the many bathrooms/shower rooms are newly equipped and excellent, the kitchens are great, the dinning room large & practical, and the lounge very comfortable and equipped with board games & books along with comfy settees. The hostel is a few minutes walk into the centre of town and just a mile from a lovely swimming beach at Scapa where I swam every morning, except for a couple of mornings when I drove a little further to Inganess Beach which is beautiful. For me, so much nicer than a posh hotel because you can cook & eat at any time and fellow visitors always seem relaxed, friendly & chatty ... you just seem to get a much better class of person in a Scottish hostel!"

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Orkney?
The best area to stay in Orkney is Stromness, a picturesque harbor town on the main island, Hoy.Stromness is well-known for its winding flagstone streets, traditional stone houses, and bustling harbor. The town extends along the waterfront, with many accommodations offering views of Scapa Flow. It's a great base for exploring the western side of Orkney, including the Heart of Neolithic Orkney UNESCO World Heritage site.Couples often find Stromness appealing due to its intimate size and scenic beauty. The town offers a selection of local shops, art galleries, and restaurants, superb for relaxed evenings after a day of sightseeing. Its ferry connections to mainland Scotland and other Orkney islands make it a convenient hub for exploring the archipelago.Kirkwall, Orkney's capital, is another excellent option, especially for those seeking more amenities and a central location. Kirkwall features the impressive St. Magnus Cathedral at its heart, surrounded by a mix of historic buildings and modern conveniences. It's the largest town in Orkney, offering a wider range of dining, shopping, and cultural experiences. For solo travelers, Kirkwall provides easy access to public transport routes across the island and a broader selection of hotels and guesthouses.
When is the best time to go to Orkney?
The best time to visit Orkney is during the summer months, from June to August, when the weather is mildest and daylight hours are longest.During this period, the average temperatures range from 12°C to 17°C, making it pleasant for exploring the islands' outdoor attractions like the Standing Stones of Stenness and the Ring of Brodgar. The extended daylight, with up to 18 hours of light, allows for full days of sightseeing and enjoying the scenic coastal paths. This time is particularly good for families due to the comfortable weather for outdoor activities and the availability of wildlife tours to see puffins and seals.Should you prefer a quieter experience with fewer crowds, the shoulder seasons of May and September also offer good conditions. While slightly cooler, these months still provide ample daylight and a good chance for pleasant weather, appealing to couples looking for a more serene trip. Many archaeological sites and museums remain open, and accommodation can be slightly less expensive than in peak summer.
