Elegant architecture, a magnificent beach park, superb art exhibitions and a bustling food market feature in this tranquil bayside neighborhood.

Spreading along the shoreline of Guanabara Bay, the neighborhood of Glória has sprawling parkland, leafy gardens and golden sands. Enjoy Rio’s world-famous beach lifestyle and varied recreational activities when you visit Glória’s huge waterfront park. Discover 20th-century Brazilian art, learn about Brazil’s folkloric and political history and browse the stalls of a lively market.

Overlooking the bay on a hill is the baroque-style Igreja Nossa Senhora da Glória do Outeiro. This 200-year-old church gave its name to the neighborhood. Admire the biblical and hunting scenes portrayed on the azulejo tile panels that decorate the interior. Find displays of period clothing, imperial jewelry and religious artifacts at the adjoining Museum Mauro Ribeiro Viegas.

Flamengo Park beckons visitors from early morning until late in the evening with its opportunities for relaxation and recreation. Walk, run, bike and skate along trails that skirt the waterside and weave around palm-shaded lawns. Join games of beach soccer, take a dip in the mild bay waters and enjoy views of Sugar Loaf Mountain at Flamengo Beach. Spot stylish yachts at Gloria Marina.

The Museum of Modern Art stands at the northern end of Flamengo Park. Journey through the history of Brazilian modern art via works by Cândido Portinari and Di Cavalcanti, among other artists. The museum’s restaurant is renowned for its experimental menu and extensive wine list. Catch a show at nearby Vivo Rio concert hall and pay your respects at the Monument to the Dead of World War II.

Shoppers flock to the area on Sundays for the Feira Livre da Gloria Market. Hundreds of lively vendors sell everything from multicolored chillies, fruits and vegetables to antiques, collectables and clothing.

In neighboring Catete, the Folclore Edison Carneiro Museum has ceramics and wooden sculptures. Stop by the Museum of the Republic in Catete Palace to learn about presidential and political history.

Public buses travel to Glória from all parts of the city and stop along Praia do Flamengo street. You can also get here easily by traveling to the Catete and Glória metro stations.
