Visit the Spanish Village Art Center to see artists at work in a large chain of studios housed in an early 20th-century building. Art classes and live demonstrations make for a fun and informative destination.
Arrive at the colonial-style structure and notice the colorful tiles spelling out the complex’s name. Wander between the picturesque trees and floral displays that help create a harmonious and inspirational environment where the artists can create.
Watch some of the artists at work and see how they piece together their artworks. A great range of styles and movements are displayed here, among the sculptors, painters and photographers. See works of clay, fiber and glass as well as mixed media, leather and jewelry.
Join a guided tour of the complex with a Spanish Village historian in period costume. Sit at a table outside with a drink and admire the artistic environment and colorful décor of the patio. Take a class in anything from ceramics and totems to glass-blowing and paint-pouring. An online archive contains photos of many of the works, providing an insight into the variety of creativity produced in this art hub.
Admission to the complex, which was initially inaugurated in 1936 as part of the California Exposition, is free. The community is active year round from late morning until late afternoon. Sign up and apply for a membership online if you’re a resident of San Diego and over age 18. Rent the patio for your own private event in the evening.
The Spanish Village Art Center is in the northern section of Balboa Park, a little northeast of central San Diego. Drive here and park your vehicle in one of the parking lots in the center of the park. Alternatively, travel by bus to one of the surrounding stops and walk to the complex. While in the park, visit such nearby attractions as the Fleet Science Center, the Japanese Friendship Garden and the San Diego Zoo.
