Celebrate the prestige and majesty of Liverpool and recall its seafaring history in this riverside district near the old docks.

Visit Pier Head, a historic ferry port area on the River Mersey, to find many of Liverpool’s waterside attractions. Crowding around the lively zone is a group of iconic structures known as the Three Graces. Inspect various memorials to get a sense of the important history in these former docks.

Walk along the eastern bank of the River Mersey, where the George’s Dock once stood. Gaze up at the impressive clock faces of the Royal Liver Building, which was constructed in the early 1900s. Spot sculptures of the mythical liver birds that keep watch over the city from this building, which features in many postcards and souvenirs.

Adjacent stands the Cunard Building, where its namesake shipping company was based. Notice the blend of Greek revival and Italian Renaissance styles in its intricate façade. The site contains the fascinating British Music Experience, which showcases the national history of pop and rock. Gaze up at the Cunard War Memorial, consisting of a Doric column hoisting a victorious figure.

Marvel at the whitewashed facade of the immense Port of Liverpool Building, which completes the trio of the Three Graces. It has a marvelous Edwardian design and a dome rising from its center. Study the elegant design of the George’s Dock Building, with its tall central tower.

Dotted around the district are several monuments, including the Titanic Memorial, the Merchant Navy War Memorial and the Alfred Lewis Jones Memorial. Inspect the four famous faces that make up the Beatles Statue. Learn more about the area through the Museum of Liverpool and the historic Pilotage Building.

Find the Pier Head district on the western edge of the Liverpool city center, overlooking the River Mersey. Travel to the James Street railway station and walk west for 5 minutes to get here. While you’re in the area, check out other nearby districts such as the Baltic Triangle, Ropewalks and Birkenhead.

Pier Head is filled with memorials and 20th-century buildings near the harbor that recall a bygone era.
