Everything from ceramics and textiles to paintings and calligraphy adorn a diverse museum amid the plum blossoms of Atami’s northern hills.

Visit the MOA Museum of Art to explore a gallery lined with an eclectic range of works of art of great national importance. The museum is perched on the cliffs of the city, providing views of Sagami Bay and the island of Hatsushima. Peruse the exhibits to get a sense of the traditional Japanese and international artworks that make up the collection.

Pick out your favorites from the range of old-world Chinese and Japanese ceramics. Delve into the sculpture area to inspect the pieces and admire the metalwork and lacquerware sections. You’ll also find all types of paintings and impressive examples of calligraphy. Marvel at the pieces that are considered national treasures, including the Tea-Leaf Jar with a Design of Wisteria and the Red and White Plum Blossoms by Ogata Korin.

Stroll through the scenic grounds, appreciating the views of the plum orchard and azalea hill. Visit at different times throughout the year to see how the landscape gardens change with the seasons.

Take a break with a hot drink at the café or enjoy a meal in the museum restaurant. The patisserie has a great range of cakes and other sweet delights. Relax in the elegant setting of the Teahouse Ippaku-an. Browse the items for sale in the Kogei Shop, which has jewelry, ceramics and other souvenirs.

The site opens daily from morning until late afternoon, Friday through Wednesday. Purchase tickets at the museum or on the official website, where you’ll find discounts for students and seniors.

The MOA Museum of Art is in the northern part of Atami, in the Momoyamacho district. Arrive at the Atami train station and walk north for about 1 mile (1.9 kilometers) to get here in roughly 25 minutes. You can also travel by bus to the museum stop.

Explore the rest of the city for some of its neighboring highlights, such as the Atami Golf Club, the Solo Sagrado de Atami and a reconstruction of Korin’s Residence.
