For a bucolic refuge of utter tranquility, a short distance from the picturesque shores of Lake Annecy, visit Chavanod. The village is characterized by agricultural patches dotted with quaint architecture. Just outside the town are the dramatic cliffs of the Gorges du Fier.
Stroll along the River Fier that marks the northern border of the town. Enjoy a picnic on a spacious spot along the river and watch the rushing water as it splashes over the rocks. Over the years, the river has carved the twists and turns of the valley known as the Gorges du Fier. Hike along the walkway built into the rock face to see the river from a height of 82 feet (25 meters).
Follow the course for about 1 hour and end your trip in the shop, which has souvenirs relating to the gorge. Relax with snacks and drinks on the site’s restaurant terrace, which provides impressive views of the landscape.
Back in the center of the hamlet, hike up and down the rolling green hills and notice the farms from which many of the locals make their living in this serene haven. Admire the gray façade of the Chavanod Church, with its strong pediment and arched windows. The structure stands on a hill, with a tall steeple rising from one of its sides, making it visible from a great distance.
Stay at a rustic inn and enjoy the slower pace of life in the village. Enter the town hall and talk with the locals about the area’s excursions and activities.
The town is a little west of Lake Annecy in the Rhône-Alpes region of eastern France. Rent a car and drive west from Annecy for 5.6 miles (9 kilometers) to travel here in about 20 minutes. Explore the region for other nearby towns including Rumilly, Thônes and Evians-les-Bains.
