Formerly granite quarrying was an important part of the Dalbeattie economy. The industry died down locally around 1883 due to cheaper imports from Denmark.

Many of the workers emigrated to other parts of the world in order to find work, a number emigrated to the United States to work at a sister quarry in Westerly, Rhode Island. Granite exported from Dalbeattie went into the Mersey Docks in Liverpool, the Thames Embankment in London, various British lighthouses, even as far as the lighthouse at the southern tip of Ceylon (Sri Lanka).

Dalbeattie is credited with developing the technique of polishing granite stone to form a shiny surface. This technique was exported throughout the world by the skilled workers of Dalbeattie as they travelled.

"I took my Mum, 2 Aunts (all in their eighties) and Pep the dog to this lovely house for a week of relaxation and togetherness. It was perfect ! The accommodation (especially the sun room and living room) were great for sitting and looking over the trees and rooftops to the bay...spacious and cosy at the same time. Rockcliffe is beautiful. The house a great walk for me and the pooch to the beach ,through the woods and over the rocks. Lots of places to visit around and about...something for...

"A lovely county castle surrounded by Belted Galloway cattle and sheep. The castle grounds have a fruit trees, herbs and vegetables. Tobias is truly a wonderful gentleman and host. He prepared an amazing breakfast both mornings which consisted of local flavors ( haggis, blood pudding, potato cakes, eggs, bacon and sausage). Tobias gave us a tour of the chapel and grand hall with interesting history. Baron James prepared a formal dinner which was also delicious. We are Maxwell descendants by DNA...

"Nicely converted barn, with clean, warm and spacious open plan ground floor, well laid out with kitchen and dining areas, comfortable sofas and large TV, close to Allonby beach and a great location for exploring the coast and the northern end of the Lake District. "The staff in all areas were friendly and courteous. The rooms were large and spotless. Nice bathroom. Rooms were quiet at night. Breakfast, bar and restaurant very good. Ample parking (we were on 6 motorcycles). Ideal base for the area, we would come again. Highly recommended."
