Travel Guide

Mount Shasta towers over everything else in northern California. Winter treks on the mountain require snowshoes, but are rewarded with a smoky view of all the ranges and valleys below. I wish the photos we took even came close to comparing to the real deal.

Hidden waterfall in Dunsmuir CA
So glad I made the 1 mile trek up the railroad tracks to this hidden gem in NorCal. There is officially no trail, but park your car above Shasta Retreat then walk through town to the railroad tracks. Follow along the tracks for about a mile and when you come to the first bridge over the Sacramento River look right. You'll hear them too. Follow the path and you will be stunned. This picture only covers part of the falls. They are 200 feet wide and are Springs pouring out of the rock face. I'm so glad I didn't let the fact that there was no trail stop me. Do beware there's trains. 2 passed me and they come close. Well worth the risk!

Quiet little mountain town, just right for what I needed. The Wheelhouse was an unexpectedly great place to hang out and write. YAKS was also great, so welcoming and great food. I always enjoy the seasonal changes at the Dunsmuir city park.

Lack of shopping in North Dunsmuir. Dunsmuir Market is too far to walk. Downtown Dunsmuir is nice.

Beautiful historic town and summer vacation destination with original buildings and unaltered nostalgic charm. Views of Mt Shasta. Local Botanical Garden with the Sacramento River running through it. Essentially quiet and void of commercial influence

Come up and enjoy. Dunsmuir needs tourism. Economy not great. People are really friendly. Steampunk festival was really a hit. Get a burger at Yak's on 5th. Amazing grass fed masterpiece!

Very cute little town, we only stayed overnight as we passed thru, we ate at the Pizza Factory and the service sucked but the pizza was awesome and would go again. If you stop in Dunsmuir go into town it is worth the 5 minute drive.

Sleepy little town with excellent dining option at Maddelena’s. Worth a detour off I 5.
