Gain fascinating insights into the life of America’s first president at this beautifully restored country estate set on the shores of the Potomac River.

George Washington's Mount Vernon is a picturesque historical plantation. Washington’s 500-acre (200-hectare) property features a grand mansion decorated with original 18th-century furniture, as well as four gardens and a modern museum. Look inside the mansion’s interior, comparing its opulence to the poor conditions in the slave quarters, kitchen, smokehouse, stables and other outbuildings. Learn about the Washington family in the superb museum and see the tombs of George and Martha Washington.

Admire the estate’s main building, a fine example of Georgian architecture. The building’s yellow pine exterior was coated with sand and painted to create the appearance of white stone blocks. Step inside the New Room, which features Hepplewhite mahogany sideboards and a molded ceiling decorated with agricultural motifs.

Some of the more notable items displayed throughout the house include a key to the Paris Bastille and Martha's china tea service as well as Washington's original globe, desk and dressing table. Go upstairs to enter George and Martha's bedroom, where Washington died.

After touring the house, stroll around the slave burial ground outside. Pay attention to two monuments honoring the African-Americans who lived and worked at the plantation. Near the river, find a 4-acre (1.6-hectare) exhibit dedicated to Washington’s research in soil conservation and crop rotation.

Don’t miss the Ford Orientation Center, near the estate’s main gate. Watch the 20-minute movie highlighting the key events in Washington’s life. Take the kids to the Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center, where they can engage with interactive displays and

American Revolution artifacts. See wax models depicting Washington at three different ages. These were created with the help of forensic experts.

George Washington's Mount Vernon is located 15 miles (24 kilometers) south of Washington, D.C. Take the metro to Huntington Station, from where bus connections are available to the estate. The property is open daily to visitors, although hours vary by season. Tickets also include admission to the nearby George Washington'sDistillery and Gristmill. See historic architecture and furnishings, plus enjoy a rare glimpse into Washington’s private life at this gorgeous plantation.
