Jaco Beach and the town itself is very bohemian with people there to surf, swim, lay out, etc. We were a family with a toddler, which was a little out of the ordinary. We loved the style of the town though. I would say if traveling with family, it may be worth looking into Punta Leona which is a little outside of Jaco, but much quieter with different amenities if you pay for them.
Know that they have boogie boards you can rent for a small fee and Jaco Beach is awesome for boogie boarding.

the beach In Jaco is very dirty, the town is dirty, not well kept, people are very hospitable, i would not recommend this town at all, lots of prostitution and drugs, if that is what one is looking for.
Unless you are a good swimmer be careful with the currents.
