Royal Leamington Spa Hotel Guide

When it comes to picking from among the hotels in Leamington Spa, you’ll be spoilt for choice. This historic town has been extending a warm welcome to travelers from far and wide ever since the medicinal benefits of its waters were first promoted at the end of the 18th century. As a result, today’s lucky visitors can browse through a tempting variety of Leamington Spa hotels, from well-appointed 5-star or 4-star hotels to indulgent luxury hotels and quirky boutique hotels.

The healing properties of the River Leam had been known since Roman times, but Royal Leamington Spa, to give it its full name, grew from a minor hamlet into one of the fastest-growing towns in England with the rediscovery of the spa waters by two local doctors. This led to the opening of the Royal Pump Rooms and Baths in 1814. The rich and famous flocked to the town to take the waters, lavish Georgian townhouses began to spring up, including the Grade II listed Lansdowne Crescent, and Queen Victoria granted it "Royal" status in 1838. The pump rooms themselves were extended to include a Turkish bath, swimming pool and public gardens. The building was closed for redevelopment in 1997 and today houses an art gallery and museum as well as the tourist information centre where you can now treat yourself to a coffee inside before sampling the spa water outside!

One of the best places to relax and enjoy a sunny day in Leamington is Victoria Park, which stretches along the south bank of the Leam and was extensively landscaped and redesigned for the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria. As well as a beautiful riverside walk, it boasts some of the best bowling greens in England and regularly hosts the Women’s World Bowling Championships. If you prefer playing sport to watching it, head for Newbold Comyn, a country park on the edge of town, which has an 18-hole golf course, 9-hole pitch and putt course, fishing areas and a leisure centre complete with gym and swimming pool. Climb up to the beacon for wonderful panoramic views of the rolling Warwickshire countryside.

After all that activity you’ll certainly be ready for a spot of pampering, so head back to one of the local spa hotels to ease body and soul while you plan your next day’s sightseeing!
