Considered one of the cradles of higher education in the U.S., this university is home to historic and majestic buildings and a great range of student societies.

Dating back to 1785, the University of Georgia is a magnificent institution that was one of the nation’s pioneering higher-education facilities. It has also developed into an ideal space to visit, with its own on-campus hotel and conference center. Chat with some of the students about university life, as you make your way around the historic buildings of the central campus in Athens.

Note that the Athens site has almost 500 buildings spread across the North Campus, West Campus, South Campus and East Campus. Admire some of the architectural highlights, including the imposing pediment and pillars of the Richard B. Russell Jr. Special Collections Libraries Building and the cylindrical dome of the Zell B. Miller Learning Center.

Stroll along the paved pathways and imagine yourself as a student in this lively educational hub, which has about 800 student organizations and all types of societies, fraternities and volunteer programs. Check the schedule for sports activities and watch a game of baseball, football or basketball, among other competitive events.

Visit the Georgia Museum of Art on the university campus to see its varied collection of paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries. Head into the State Botanical Garden of Georgia and read a book on a bench by the fountain.

The visitor center provides regular campus tours Monday through Saturday. You can also take a virtual tour through the university’s official website. The university also has smaller campuses in Atlanta and Lawrenceville.

Find the main campus of the University of Georgia a little south of the city center of Athens, in the northeastern part of the state. Walk south from the Georgia Theatre for roughly 15 minutes to reach the center of campus. While you’re in this part of the city, make sure to see other nearby attractions such as the Sanford Stadium, the Georgia Museum of Art and the Tree That Owns Itself.
