While in San Diego, plan a visit to the Women’s Museum, an enlightening institution devoted to the triumphs of women across the world. From the suffragettes to the struggles of black women, the museum has all types of intriguing exhibits relating to the fight for equality of the sexes. Learn about the roles of women in events throughout history in this comprehensive museum.
Check out the various temporary displays on everything from women in medicine and Prohibition times, to the struggle for the vote. Look at the historic documents and costumes in the Marching Toward Empowerment gallery. This exhibit covers a period from the late 19th to the early 20th century, telling the stories of the activists who helped advance the rights of women. Learn about the individual suffragists from the stories here and consider how they interacted with communities of color.
Attend one of the many talks and panel discussions, among other events held in the museum. Pick up souvenirs and clothing items from the museum shop. Explore the library and archive for its special collections. Wander through the elegant colonnade of the Arts District Liberty Station, where the museum is housed. The building contains a range of galleries, studios and restaurants.
The museum site opens Wednesday through Sunday from midday until late afternoon. It is free to enter, although donations are welcome. The museum dates back to 1983 and was opened to the public in 1995.
The Women’s Museum is on the western side of San Diego International Airport. From the center of San Diego, drive northwest for 4 miles (6 kilometers) to travel here in about 15 minutes. While you’re in the area, consider visiting surrounding attractions such as the Liberty Public Market, Harbor Island Park and Shoreline Park.
