Visit a town that combines city excitement with the solitude of nature. Its maritime location promotes the healthy living that you’d expect near the sea.

Virginia’s Carrollton is close to Norfolk on Chesapeake Bay, where the naval base is described as one of the world’s largest stations. Walk around Carrollton to understand why Norfolk commuters choose to live here. The scenic area is about 20 miles (32 kilometers) from Norfolk, near the mouth of the James River. Cross the river on the James River Bridge to be in historic Newport News.

Experience the serenity of the James River marsh from Carrollton’s Ragged Island Wildlife Management Area. Walk along the wooden boardwalks past marshlands and woody hummocks in the 1,537-acre (622-hectare) wildlife refuge. Along the way, read interpretive signs explaining the diversity of the area.

This part of Virginia is horse country, with more than a dozen farms within 30 miles (50 kilometers) of Carrollton offering boarding, training, pony rides and equestrian shows. Check the schedule at Amazing Grace Stable to see if any dressage events are planned during your stay.

Carrollton is located in Isle of Wight County, part of the heavily populated area known as the Hampton Roads region with the cities of Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Williamsburg, Newport News, Norfolk, Hampton, Franklin, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Poquoson. Visit the Virginia Living Museum in Newport News to see over 250 species that live in the state today and learn about some extinct species while following the Dinosaur Discovery Trail.

While in Newport News, stop at some of the lovely old homes and plantations that are open to the public. Jamestown is one of the first English settlements in North America. View a detailed chronology provided in the Historic Jamestowne visitor center and theater. Tour the Fort Monroe National Monument, built in the 1800s and the largest stone fort in the country.

Fly into Norfolk International Airport and drive west to Carrollton in less than 40 minutes. Enjoy a relaxing vacation in this scenic and historic setting.

We were visiting to attend a baby shower for our daughter and son-in-law. We had brunch at the cockeyed rooster, the food was good. We stopped at a walmart to pickup a few items. The baby shower was held at the Hampton Inn. They didn't have a room.
