Try the nutty chocolate ice cream balls, learn about the castle execution of Napoleon’s brother-in-law and relax on the beach.

Pizzo is a quaint settlement perched on hilltops overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Stunning cliffs create an idyllic setting, while the Aragonese castle and medieval churches shed light on the town’s fascinating culture and history. Hear tales of fascinating figures and visit intriguing structures in this picturesque coastal resort.

Among the highlights of the town is the Murat Castle, which survives from its construction in the 15th century. Take a tour of the dungeons and battlements and admire the vista of the sea. See the former prison cell of Joachim Murat, Napoleon’s brother-in-law, who was executed by firing squad in the castle’s main hall for treason.

The castle is perched at the top of a cliff, near varied restaurants that overlook the beach. Order seafood and pizza, among other regional delicacies. Try the famed Pizzo Tartufo, which comprises a large ball of nutty chocolate ice cream containing liquid chocolate. Enjoy panoramic views of the Pizzo Beach from your table.

Descend to the beach and find a spot for a bit of sunbathing. Walk along the Passerella di Pizzo pier at the strand’s northern end and enjoy the views of the cliffs and the castle above. The pier extends into the sea, flanked by rocks that help it blend into its natural surroundings.

Back in the historic center, see such sights as the Monumento ai Caduti and St. Giorgio Church. Head to the northeastern outskirts of the town for the mesmerizing Piedigrotta Church, a religious structure within the caves of a grassy hill.

The town of Pizzo is in the Calabria region in southwestern Italy. Fly to Lamezia Terme International Airport and drive south for 19 miles (31 kilometers) to get here in about 30 minutes. You can also take a train straight from the airport to Pizzo Railway Station, a short walk south of the town.

Pizzo is a hilly haven with beaches, historic vestiges and a proud culture.
