Vibo Valentia

Travel Guide

A coastal town with a historic castle on a hill, a beach, and rocky shoreline.
A beach with clear turquoise waters, a row of colorful umbrellas, and historic buildings on a cliff.
A rural road with a large tree on the right and a sunset in the background.
Visit the medieval churches and the castle and relax at the secluded bays scattered between cliffs on the scenic coast.

Vibo Valentia is a quaint hilltop town near the Tyrrhenian Coast with a range of historic relics, including city walls and a castle. Its northern outskirts contain a lively marina that plays an integral role in the region’s economy and culture. Discover the medieval delights in the historic center to learn about the city’s intriguing history.

Among the highlights is the Norman Castle in the southeastern part of the city. Admire the state of this early medieval castle, which is remarkably well preserved. Spend the afternoon exploring this vast structure and enjoy a picnic on a pleasant grassy spot on the grounds.

Continue with this medieval theme by walking beside the remains of the Walls of Hipponion. See the foundations of the eight towers along the 1,150 feet (350 meters) of surviving ramparts. The city also contains several intriguing religious sights, such as the Church of Santa Ruba, the Church of the Rosario and the glorious Vibo Valentia Cathedral, which overlooks the San Leoluca Piazza.

Make your way to the port town of Vibo Marina, just north of the main city. Its varied restaurants serve seafood and pizza, among other delicacies. Note that its tuna trade is important to local industries. See the range of boats docked in the Porto di Vibo Marina area.

Explore the towns of the surrounding area for their secluded coves and picturesque views. Head to the stunning Michelino Beach for its utter serenity. Look around the Piedigrotta Church outside Pizzo. It consists of a religious structure carved into the cliff face by a beach.

The city of Vibo Valentia stands by the Tyrrhenian Coast in the Calabria region of southwestern Italy. Fly to Lamezia Terme International Airport and drive south for 25 miles (40 kilometers) to get here in about 40 minutes. Travel along the coast by railway. See nearby towns, such as Pizzo, Cabo Vaticano and Zungri.
