Get a historical perspective of the region by car or cycle. Journey a classic route that has existed over 280 years and be awed by scenic landscapes.

The King’s Road (Le Chemin du Roy) in the Canadian province of Québec has been open to wheeled traffic since 1737 as the original thoroughfare between Montréal and Québec City. The 170-mile (280-kilometer) road travels along the St. Lawrence River and incorporates the Route Verte (Green Route), which is reserved for cyclists. Look for the blue tourist signs indicating historic sites or attractions.

Starting at the northern end in Québec City’s old sector, visit the Parliament Building by taking a guided or self-guided tour of the notable site. You’ll discover an interesting combination of both period and modern architecture. Attend a parliamentary sitting if government is in session. Although you may not understand French, the methodical order of government business is observed. Relax in the surrounding Parliament Gardens with its large assortment of plants and trees.

Time your arrival at the next nearby site, La Maison Henry-Stuart, to have tea on the house’s wide veranda. The building is an example of a popular 19th-century residential style. Walk in Bois-de-Coulonge Park near the river and visit the area’s first Jesuit mission, Maison des Jésuites de Sillery.

As you leave the city, locate the Cartier-Roberval Archaeological Site, where North America’s first French colony was discovered. The picturesque town of Cap-Santé has one of the most beautiful streets in the country, Vieux-Chemin. Stop at Cap Lauzon for the historic Vieux Presbytère de Deschambault, a rectory with incredible river views.

About 7 miles (11 kilometers) away is the Moulin de la Chevrotière, a former mill that features an exhibit of the skilled trades. Travel farther to the Moulin à vent de Grondines, the oldest windmill in Québec, built in 1674. When it was no longer used as a flourmill, it became a lighthouse on the St. Lawrence River shoreline.

Stop at many other places along the King’s Road, including food locations serving delicious regional specialties.

8/10 Very Good! (5,524 reviews)
The room was absolutely spotless and beautiful. The bed was very comfortable and the breakfast was absolutely amazing. Lots of options one of the best I’ve ever had on the road. Only downside would be it’s a little noisy because of being an old hospital and marble floors. But still amazing.
