Visit Atotonilco, a rustic town known for its World Heritage-listed Sanctuary of Atotonilco, which has many gorgeous works of art and historic artifacts. Wellness spas have sprung up in close proximity to the religious masterpiece, making use of the region’s thermal waters. After exploring the large religious structure, rest weary feat at one of the spas.
The Sanctuary of Atotonilco is a large 18th-century complex enclosed by whitewashed walls. Admire the Mexican baroque design of the compound, with a large dome rising from its center. Enter the sanctuary and notice the array of ornate art depicting all types of saints, symbols and mythical creatures. The interior is filled with mesmerizing designs, from gilded altars and sculptures to painted mirrors and frescoes depicting Christ.
Note that construction began on the site in 1740 and was finished 35 years later. Attend the Sunday market on the plaza outside the sanctuary. Its stalls display a range of incense sticks, candles and other religious items.
For a change of tone, head to one of the spas that use the region’s thermal waters. Escondido Place merges its pools harmoniously with nature, with outdoor water basins and fountains flowing over rocks. Nearby is La Gruta Spa, a deluxe and exclusive wellness center with gorgeous internal and external pools. Get warm in the Temazcal hut, relax with a massage on a bed and enjoy a meal in the restaurant.
Skirting the eastern bank of the Laja River, the town is in the heart of Guanajuato in central Mexico. Arrive in the town of San Miguel de Allende and drive north for 10 miles (16 kilometers) to get here in about 20 minutes. Continue traveling along this route to reach surrounding towns such as Los Galvanes, San Gabriel and Dolores Hidalgo.
